Moves, the popular movement and activity diary app for iOS and Android has announced  its acquisition by Facebook on Thursday. ProtoGeo, the Finnish startup behind the app, has announced that they will be joining the Facebook team to enhance their products while assuring customers that the application will remain functional as is, without interference from Facebook.

The full-text of the email sent to Moves members is as follows:

Today, we’re delighted to announce that Facebook has acquired our company. Since we launched Moves, we’ve been focused on running a simple and clean activity diary that millions of people like you have enjoyed using.

Now, we’re joining Facebook’s talented team to work on building and improving their products and services with a shared mission of supporting simple, efficient tools for more than a billion people.

What does this mean for you as users of Moves? Moves will continue to operate as a standalone app, and there are no plans to change that or commingle data with Facebook.

Thank you for supporting us on this journey, and we’re looking forward to our future at Facebook!

Sampo, and the Moves team

Facebook has been continuing its string of acquisitions following the high-profile purchases of WhatsApp and Oculus earlier this year and its acquisition of Instagram back in 2012.

The popular social network, which is shifting its focus to mobile apps after announcing the separation of its messaging functionality from the main app, has often been criticized for its privacy transgressions in an effort to target relevant advertisements to its userbase. That very accusation has been promulgated following its Moves acquisition by critics claiming geolocation data from Moves will be utilized to further collect data on the activities of its users.

Details of what the ProtoGeo team will be doing as a part of Facebook are undisclosed at the moment, but what is for certain is that Moves and Facebook’s new Nearby Friends feature aren’t gifts from the Silicon Valley luminaries to improve your fitness or help you find your friends.
